Rugby for everyone —
not just for "players"

At Athenian Centaurs RFC, we believe rugby can be a space of strength, joy, and genuine belonging. We are a queer & inclusive rugby union club based in Athens, Greece, founded in 2020 with one clear purpose: to open the game to more people, not fewer.

Since our founding we have been building a club where all identities, all bodies, and all experience levels are welcome with the same seriousness and the same care. Whether you are a complete beginner, a returning player, or an experienced athlete, you belong here.

We know that the first contact with a contact sport can feel intimidating, especially for LGBTQ+ people who have experienced exclusion in traditional sports spaces. That is exactly why we invest in proper onboarding, gradual skill-building, safety, respect, and real teamwork.

Rugby union is a sport for different roles, abilities, and body types. You do not need to "look like a rugby player" to start. You just need curiosity and willingness to grow alongside the team.

Rugby is better when it includes more people. That is why we exist.

More than a training session

The Athenian Centaurs are a community. Training sessions, open trainings, events, women's+ actions, social visibility, and club merch are all part of the same thing: showing that sport can be safer, more open, and more human.

Inclusive by design

Open onboarding, respect for all identities, clear communication, and a beginner-friendly approach are not extras, they are the foundation. The Centaurs are built so that LGBTQ+ people and allies feel immediately at home.

Beginner-friendly rugby

Never played? Perfect, that is where we start. Our beginner's guide to rugby in Athens walks you through rules, positions, and what to bring to your first session. No experience required.

Community beyond the pitch

Rugby at the Centaurs means training, social events, women's+ sessions, open trainings, visibility in Athens, and a genuine sense of belonging that extends well beyond the final whistle.

Women's+ & diverse voices

We actively program women's+ rugby sessions and 15s days in Athens, and we champion visibility for gender-diverse players in a sport that is changing. Check our Women's+ rugby Athens events.

Part of a global movement

As a member of International Gay Rugby, we are connected to a worldwide community of inclusive clubs, from the Berlin Bruisers to the Copenhagen Wolves, that share the same values on and off the pitch.

Visible in Athens & online

From open training sessions in Athens to club merch that travels the world, the Centaurs build visibility for queer sport in Greece, one hoodie, one try, one event at a time.

You are in exactly
the right place

Rugby union is a sport of many roles. There is a position for your body type, your strength, and your personality, whether you are a powerhouse prop or a quick winger. The Centaurs offer a structured, safe, and genuinely welcoming entry point to the game.

Our open training sessions in Athens are designed for people with zero experience. You do not need a mouthguard for your first visit. You do not need to be fit. You just need to show up.

I have never played rugby. Can I still come?

Absolutely. Most of our members started with zero experience. Our open training sessions are designed from the ground up for beginners.

I am 30+. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Rugby union has players of all ages. We have a range of members in their 20s, 30s, and 40s who play and train together regularly.

I am not fit enough yet.

Come as you are. Fitness improves through training. You do not need to be in shape before you start, that is what training is for.

Can I come alone without knowing anyone?

Yes, and most people do exactly that. We make sure new members are welcomed properly from the moment they arrive. You will not be left on your own.

Is this really inclusive for LGBTQ+ people?

Yes, by design. The Centaurs were founded specifically as a queer & inclusive space. Everyone is welcome, LGBTQ+ members, allies, and anyone who values a respectful and open team culture.
